David R. Johnston of Washington has
been a teacher and coach in the Washington School District since 1955
and head track coach at Washington High School since 1958, with a 306-37
record that includes a 55 meet win streak. He has also won four WPIAL
championships.
He served as head football coach from 1959 through 1972, with the
exception of 1969, and had a 101-45 record with three Western Conference
championships and an undefeated and untied team in 1963 which lacked
sufficient Gardner Points to play for the WPIAL title. He also coached
junior high basketball from 1956 through 1959 with a 58-15 record and
three section championships.
Johnston has received several awards, including the Knights of Columbus
Football Coach of the Year in 1963; 1975 Western Pennsylvania Chapter
Sports Hall of Fame Track award; Outstanding Track and Field Coach award
from Tri-State Coaches Association In 1980; Is past president of the
WPIAL Football Coaches Association and has served 30 years on the Track
steering committee.
He is a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School and Slippery Rock University
and holds a masters degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
