Thomas Mears of Washington is a
native of Wheeling, WV., where he attended Linsly Institute and
participated in football and basketball before his graduation in 1940.
He received All-City honors in both sports.
He received a scholarship to Washington & Jefferson College and led the
freshman basketball team in scoring.
Mears was a member of the 1943 W&J team under head coach Adam Sanders
which was last-seeded in the National Invitational Tournament in 1943.
But the Presidents finished third by upsetting top-seeded Creighton
University and defeating Fordham University in the consolation game
after bowing to Toledo in the semifinals.
Mears, a 1944 graduate of W&J, also played basketball in the service and
in semi-pro ranks from 1949 through 1951. He is a former member of the
Washington Fire Department and was employed in the security department
at Fairmont Supply Co. |
