Joseph Chicone, the younger of two
brothers prominent in Washington basketball, played for Washington High
School from 1937 through 1939. He was a member of three WPIAL Section 2
championship teams with the squad having a 20-4 record in 1937-38 and a
24-1 record in 1938-39 when Wash High lost the WPIAL championship game
by one point to state champion Homestead.
Chicone led the team in scoring and was sectional runner-up in 1938-1939
when he was named to the AlI-WPIAL second team. From 1939 through 1942,
He played for Independent teams in the area including Fourth
Presbyterian in the YMCA Church League and Hazel Atlas No. 2 in the
Industrial League.
After military service in World War II, he played from 1946 through 1948
for McWreath Dairy, the Community League champion in 1946, and
Washington American Legion, the 25th District champion in 1948 with
Chicone as top scorer.
He went back in the service and from 1948 until 1952, played for the
16th Infantry Regiment in Germany and was athletic director in the
Second Battalion, 16th Infantry.
In 1952-53, Chicone, promoted to first lieutenant, coached the
Indiantown Gap Military Reservation team while serving as assistant
athletic director. The squad had a 20-4 record playing against such
teams as Villanova University, and also played in preliminaries to
National Basketball Association games in New York and Philadelphia.
Chicone is now a resident of Tampa, FL.
