For many years Ray Fioroni has shown
a remarkable talent and leadership in both athletics and education. A
product of Crafton High School, following service in the U.S. Army
during World War II, Dr. Fioroni graduated from Slippery Rock University
in 1949. He continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh,
receiving his Masters of Education degree in 1952 and a Doctorate of
Education in 1973.
While the head football coach at Avella High School, from 1952 to 1961,
he turned a losing program into a football powerhouse with 29
consecutive winning and four undefeated seasons in 1957, 1958, 1959 and
1961. In the same years his team won the Washington-Greene County
Conference championship four times and twice was the WPIAL champion. His
overall record was 69 wins, 14 losses and four ties. In his last five
years as coach of the Avella Eagles, his teams won 40, lost two and tied
twice.
Recognized as an outstanding high school coach, he was twice honored as
Washington County Coach of the Year by Knights of Columbus Council 1083,
in 1957 and 1961. He has also been inducted into the National
Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame and the Italian-American Society of
Washington County.
In 1965, 1966 and 1967, he was an assistant football coach at Bethany
College.
Dr. Fioroni became Curriculum Director at Avella in 1958 and was named
Avella High Principal in 1961. He served as Superintendent of the Avella
School District from 1970 until his retirement in 1984.
Dr. Fioroni and his wife, Dena, reside in Avella, and have one daughter,
Amy, a grandson, Anthony D'Amico and a step-granddaughter, Jonelle
D'Amico.
