ROGER E. HUSTON

2001 - HARNESS RACING
 
Host of The Ladbroke Racing Network, Roger Huston has been announcing horse races for more than half of his life. This 1960 graduate of Xenia, OH high school, received a degree in Education from Wilmington College. Wilmington, OH in 1965. He had announced his first race in 1960 in Wilmington, then worked five county fairs, announced 99 races and earned $399. As a sports and news director for a radio station in Xenia from 1960-1967, working 17 county fairs in Ohio in 1967.

In 1965 he became a part-time announcer at The Red Mile in Lexington, KY He earned a full-time position there in 1967 and remained for the spring and fall meets through 1975. He worked Pompano Park at Pompano Beach. Fl., from 1967 through 1975. In 1976 he began his present career at Ladbroke at The Meadows. He is presently working eight county fairs, covering Butler, Crawford, Greene and Washington in Pennsylvania; Delaware, Columbiana. Mahoning and Knox in Ohio; and the West Virginia State Fair.

Since 1967, Huston has announced the Little Brown Jug, in Delaware, a pacing Triple Crown event watched by an estimated crowd of 55,000 annually. He has hosted the Ladbroke Racing Network, a four and a half hour live racing show on cable television five nights a week that reaches a million homes. He is a retired amateur driver with a lifetime winning percentage of .349. He was the national driving champion in 1986 with Jubilee John and finished second in 1985, 1987, 1989 and 1990.

Turning his attention briefly from the harness tracks, Roger was an announcer for the University of Pittsburgh football and basketball from 1978 to 1982.

President of harness Publicists in 1990 and Chairman in 1991, he was a Golden Pen Award winner in 1993. He is a trustee of Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame since 1998, and last year was added to the Little Brown Jug Wall of Fame.
