The son of another member of the
Washington-Greene Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame,
Robert "Banty" Reihner, Henry Reihner spent 30 years teaching social
studies and coaching high school wrestling. Twenty-eight of those years
were at Trinity High School and many Trinity athletes and others who
benefited from his coaching in the South Franklin-Morris Township
athletic program have fond memories of Henry Reihner.
A product of the south side of Washington, PA, Henry went to Washington
High School where he played football and baseball and was a member of
the track and wrestling squads. He graduated in 1946. In 1949 he began a
four-year wrestling career at Waynesburg College in the 145-pound class.
His tenure as a wrestling coach at Trinity spanned nearly three decades
and his spot as head coach in 1955-1956. In 1959-1960 he was an
assistant to Stan DuBelle, and in 1975 with Joe Shook. During his time
as Trinity's wrestling mentor his teams had 22 dual meet wins, eight
WPIAL individual champions, a dozen sectional individual champs and four
PIAA individual champions. The PIAA champs were Roland Taggart. 112
pounds, and Bill Gallo, 145 pounds, in 1955, and Ralph Littleberry, 127
pounds, and Veryl Long, 145 pounds, in 1956. Trinity won a pair of WPIAL
section titles under Coach Reihner's guidance.
A Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association official from 1953
to 1973, Henry has been named an honorary member of the association.
Henry Reihner died in 1990, following an illness of several months. He
was 62 years old. His wife, June; son, Robert, and daughter, Linda
Stoddard, and seven grandchildren reside in South Franklin Township.
