George Robinson Jr. has spent a major
portion of his life playing sports and teaching sports skills to young
people. After playing three years of football and basketball at Trinity
High School, George entered the Marine Corps and played football with
the Camp Lejeune Leathernecks from 1957 to 1960. Returning to
Washington, he played semi-pro football for the Washington Generals and
the Western Pennsylvania Mustangs. He was a member of the All-Semi-Pro
team of the Eastern Seaboard from 1968 to 1972.
Robinson began his youth sports coaching career with the City of
Washington's Sixth Ware midget football team in 1960. In 1962 he coached
boys basketball at LeMoyne Center and became a staff member at the
Center.
Turning his attention to diamond sports, he became an umpire in the Ten
Mile Valley boys baseball league in 1963 and became the League's chief
umpire in 1964. From 1965 to 1977, George was the District VII Youth
Commissioner for the American Softball Association and was named ASA
Commissioner of the Year in 1985. He also coached girls basketball, at
Sixth Ward and East Washington, from 1977 to 1994.
Long recognized throughout the Washington area as an effective,
conscientious worker with young people in a sports environment, George
joined the Washington High School football staff in 1989 and continues
to be an integral part of Coach Guy Montecalvo's Little Prexie coaching
staff.
