Harold "Mack" McElhaney, graduate,
Duke University, an outstanding athlete at Burgettstown High School,
earning All-Conference honors as a fullback and linebacker, team captain
and leading scorer. A wrestling section champion and WPIAL champion, he
was undefeated with a 20-0 record in his senior year losing only in the
PIAA Championships.
At Duke, Mack started at fullback and linebacker for three years. He was
the recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Award, voted team captain and
played in the 1955 and 1958 Orange Bowls, scoring twice against
Oklahoma. He was an eighth draft choice of the Philadelphia Eagles. As a
wrestler, he was the Atlantic Coast Conference's 191-pound champion in
1956 and 1957. During his college career he suffered only three losses,
all in the heavyweight class.
As the head wrestling coach at Sturgis High School, he led his team to a
third-place ranking in the state of Michigan. He moved on to Dickinson
College, Carlisle, PA. and became head wrestling coach along with being
an assistant football and track coach, then to Duke University, as an
assistant football coach for three years.
Following his coaching career, Mack became assistant director of
athletics at Duke, director of athletics at Allegheny College, director
of athletics at Ohio University and special assistant to the director of
athletics at North Carolina State University.
Mack has been inducted into the Allegheny College and Duke University
Hall of Fame.
He and his wife, Gloria, reside in Cary, N.C., and are parents of three
children, Jeff, Mary Lynne and Kellie and have four grandchildren.
