DR. STEVE KORCHECK

2004 - FOOTBALL
 
The greatest all-around athlete to come out of the Carmichaels Area. The son of a coal miner born in a mining patch but who grew up to become an All-American football player, Major league baseball player and a College President. Steve earned 11 letters at Cumberland Twp. and Carmichael High School, playing football, basketball and baseball. An-Outstanding athlete, he passed up scholarships to Notre Dame, Pitt, Harvard, West Virginia and others, but he chose George Washington University where he was permitted to play both football and baseball, an opportunity not offered by the other colleges.

At George Washington, he excelled not only in athletics, but he consistently appeared on the Dean's List of Academic Excellence as an Education-Biology major. Korcheck decided to by pass pro football and signed with the Washington Senators, in June 1954 at 22 years of age. After 3 years playing for the Senators, he decided to retire when the Senators moved to Minneapolis so not to uproot his family. He Returned to George Washington to pursue his Masters and Doctor's degrees. He returned to baseball as a scout for the K.C. Royals the late 60's. During the summer of 1970 he began teaching and coaching baseball at Manatee Community College. He was elected President of Manatee College and served as President until his retirement in 1997.
