Laila’s name is etched into Pennsylvania track history, the first girl
in state history to sweep the grueling sprint events: the 100, 200 and
400 meters and added her fourth gold metal with a victory in the 400
relay that same afternoon, June 2, 1996 at Shippensburg University.
The Washington High School graduate, without question, is the elite
category of both female and male track greats that have excelled in one
of the storied track and field programs in Pennsylvania.
1995
100 and 200 Meter Dashes — Washington-Greene County Coaches Track
Champion. Selected Washington Observer-Reporter “Girls Outstanding
Performer”. 200 Meter Dash Wash High record set at prestigious Baldwin
Invitational WPIAL 100 Meter Dash, set record of 12.2 in finals
Won WPIAL 200 Meter Dash, Anchored 400 x 100 Meter Relay to win WPIAL
Championship in 50.8 seconds PIAA Gold Medalist in the 200 Meter Dash
setting a state record of 24.92 seconds PIAA Silver Medalist in 100
Meter Dash
PIAA Gold Medalist, anchored 4 x 100 Meter Relay
Named All-State by the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association
1996
Baldwin Invitational —WPJAL - Won Gold Medals in the 100 (12.6), 200
(26.1) and 400 (set WPIAL Record of 56.8 seconds) Meter Dashes and
anchored the 4 x 100 (50.3) Relay team to win the Gold Medal. PIAA AA —
WON 100 (12.13), 200 (25.15), 400 (55.76) and anchored the 4 x 100 Relay
to win the Gold Medal. She accomplished these victories by running 10
races that afternoon. She won 40 of the 45 points for the Washington
High School Girls team to win the PIAA Team Championship Named for the
second consecutive year to the All-State Track and Field Team by the
Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association
At Penn State she qualified for the United States Team in the Junior Pan
Am Games and earned a trip to Cuba, selected as a USATF Junior
All-American in the 400 Meter Dash and selected as a member of the 1998
All Eastern College Athletic Conference Div. I Championship, Women’s
indoor Track and Field in the 400 Meters Dash.
She was inducted into the Washington High School Wall of Fame, Class
2004.
