At Washington High School Grinage scored 1050 points in 75 games, (14
point average per game) and was the assist leader for 3 years.
Associated Press All-State Honorable Mention and became the second Wash
High basketball player in the history of the school to be named First
Team United Press International’s All-State, Class B. He led his team to
the PIAA Semi-Finals for the first time in the school’s history with a
25-4 record.
At Clarion University he played in all 108 basketball games from 1974-77
during his career. He was Clarion’s #1 career leader in assists with
534, #1 in Free Throw Percentage, 82.8 and ft 4 in scoring with 1,378
points.
As a senior (1977) he helped Clarion to a 27-3 season, winning the PSAC-West
and NAIA District 18 Title and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament.
Grinage was selected an NAIA All-American, PSAC —West First team
All-Star selection and a Pittsburgh Press and Pittsburgh Post Gazette
All-Star selection.
Grinage coached Ft. Cherry High School Boys Basketball for four years.
He has been a PIAA basketball official for 29 years, officiating 5 WPIAL
championship games and 2 PIAA State championship games. Has been an NCAA
basketball official for 19 years and a Division I official for 16 years.
Carl was inducted into the Clarion University Hall of Fame, Class of
2006
